So whenever I start thinking maybe I ought to retie my Nerve profile and cast it back out on the waters to see what nibbles on the line, I hear this little voice telling me that whatever it is I'm looking for, that's not how I'm going to find it.

Or, more accurately, how it's going to find me.

The cosmos provide, what you need and when you need it; looking at the big picture, they haven't let me down yet.

i have similar issues with online personals.

but then again, i just sent a message to someone via friendster of all things at random.

although i am a complete advocate for widening one's net, i'm just not sure how far one should widen it.

I mean, I know the online personal ad has worked for plenty of people, but I also know people have somehow managed to meet and fall in love for thousands of years prior to the invention of the Internet, too.

I think personals work well for people who are looking for "partners." But I don't know how to do that "partnership" thing, and it's going to take more than having a few friends in common, or knowing five things you can't live without, to compell me to want to learn.

yo tambien.

i just feel like internet dating is all about one click- you and them on the first date. and if it doesn't work out you'll never know why and you're sposed to just go on to the next one instead of figuring out if you were just nervous or they just met the love of their life last week or are secretly married.

which isn't really that realistic.

bah.

word.

life isn't about one click.

you know, I think about the friends I've made on the internet, and it's completely different! No pressure, no expectation, no one shot deal; you're just happy to know them and simply enjoy their being.

I mean, what if I got out to Brigantine Beach and decided I didn't click with you all and never spoke to any of you again?

totally! i mean, i've completely been like "no" on some dates but i think they were extreme cases, and in the cases where i was interested, never got a call back. it's sucky.

ugh, i also think the overall 1 on 1 ness of dating is what makes it fucked up. the only good people i've met from the internet have been forum situations so you can take your time getting to know them and there's no pressure.

i guess i should have met my lover in high school. oh well.

I think you're right, it does work both ways. I mean, it was random as hell that the mister and I met online, especially once we realized that we had people and friends in common. But I think we're also the exception.

Plus, there's some odd folks on that there interweb.

It was *very* strange to meet Eric through an online personal, having as much in common as we did (living four blocks away from each other, having gone to college in Athens at the same time, having mutual friends in Baltimore, etc) and never having met before. And that was lots of fun while it lasted, for the most part. And he did give me that fabulous bathtub.

Ultimately, if the best that can be said about my advenutes in online dating was that I got a free free cast-iron clawfoot bathtub out of the deal, I really can't complain.
