discarded role models
Oct. 10th, 2005 01:20 pmJohn Wayne has never been one of my role models. Yeah, he's macho all right, but at the core he's an uptight nerd with a flagpole up his ass.
Jimmy Stewart played the "aw shucks" card too heavy. Sure it's cute as a button, but the helpless giggle really only works when you're trying to buy lunch in a Mediterranean country or need help with an item on the top shelf at Home Depot.
Gary Cooper was strong, silent, and sexy as hell, but not sly enough. It's too bad his Forest Gumpish onscreen persona didn't have more of his real-life reputation.
Henry Fonda was also strong and silent, but sadly not sexy. Sorry.
William Holden had a meanness about him that belied a fundamental insecurity in his own potency.
