good riddance to 2006
Dec. 31st, 2006 10:05 amThis would be where I would post a wrap-up to the year, but since that's what I've been doing here all along, I'd rather use the time more judiciously during my last day in Edinburgh.
Been quite a year, eh? Lots of ups, lots of downs. More ups than downs. I'm glad it didn't kill me.
Auld lang syne, babycakes.

cathedrals and pantos and Arthur's Seat
Dec. 26th, 2006 08:15 pmI tried extra hard not to be Cranky MacCrankypants today, but I don't think I fooled anyone. We got separated about halfway up Arthur's Seat, and I wandered around looking for them for like an hour (more or less; time has no meaning anymore) but it was cold and dark and my legs were jelly and I really had to pee so I ended up hopping a cab back to the hostel. I'm sure they figured out what happened, eventually. Meanwhile, I'm going to get a headstart on teh sleep and with any luck will be comotose by the time they come rolling in.
I met two dogs, Gilly and Eddie. Pictures to follow. Many pictures taken today, especially of the cathedral behind Clifton Terrace and the view up Prince Street to Waverly Bridge, but my hands were shaking pretty badly so I don't know how many of them came out worth a damn.

We slept until noon, then had Italian for lunch and Chinese for dinner and there was a whole lotta beer and walking in between. I took pictures of interesting things on my cell phone. I wonder if they came out. I wonder if they'll still be interesting.
The thing I missed about travelling alone was being able to wander down dark, creepy alleys and not worry about what may be lurking in the shadows. The thing I have not missed is being kept awake at 1:30 in the morning by an 11-year-old insomniac on creaky bedsprings.

Greeting from Edinburgh!
I'm really strung out. I think it's the fog.
Today we explored the Castle and it was unbelievably cool, except I forgot my camera, so no pictures.
I hope to be more lucid tomorrow. Nothing will be open, so it's a good day for self-guided walking tours and carry-out. We found a couple of restaurants that promised to be serving food tomorrow, but no guarantees on deep fried Mars bar or haggis.
