wtf?

I do not understand how this vendor ...

A) gets off charging $3.50 for a rewrite of Barbara Walker's Dayflower Lace pattern*

B) has the nerve to state on the shop policies page: YOU MAY NOT COPY THE PATTERN FOR TRANSFER OR SALE OF ANY SORT, EITHER IN PHYSICAL OR DIGITAL FORM, AS THIS IS A VIOLATION OF U.S. COPYRIGHT LAW. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Don't we, as a creative community, have a duty to blow the whistle on that kind of thing?

*This is one of my favorite lace panels ... I worked it into a stunning pair of gauntlets for [livejournal.com profile] brdgt, and would never dream of selling my pattern for profit because HELLO IT'S NOT MY PATTERN ... but you can totally have it if you want.

wtf?

I don't understand this at all.

After months of waiting for the new Nancy Bush Estonian knitted lace book, I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed. It's all nupps, no stars. Yeah, there are some pretty patterns in there, but nothing near as nifty as Laminaria, and that was free.

After three beers, my gauge is utterly fucked.

Also this weekend:
* raspberry lambic at the Folly!
* 80's karaoke and matzoh ball soup!
* magic tricks accompanied by blue-grassy Social Distortion!

It was a good weekend.

But now I wonder, about those 76 virgins promised to virtuous men in heaven by the Koran, when you de-virginize one, do you get a new one to replenish your stock in order to keep the number constant? Or does her virginity grow back every night, like Prometheus's liver? Or is 76 simply the number you are given to start out with, and what you do with them is up to you?

It is 76 virgins, right? Like trombones, leading the big parade?

this is interesting

Also, do virtuous women also get 76 72 virgins? Because I've been with enough virgins to tell you that showing 72 nervous teenagers how to negotiate the clitoris is not my idea of heaven.

for [livejournal.com profile] ranger_hotsauce's birthday present, I made the flogger from Naughty Needles.

This was very easy and fun to make. It took less than an hour and one spool (fifty feet) of macrame cord, with some left over.

For several years now, knitting guru Annie Modesitt has been my crafting idol with her innovative designs, creative techniques, and all-around awesomeness.

Recently her husband was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a form of blood cancer that manifests in the bone marrow, and her family needs our help.

Read more about it at Annie's blog, on the Red Carpet Convertible Page.

ball #2

I knit another ball last night.

Even though I used comparable weight yarn and the same size needles, it came out much larger than the first one size comparison ). I suspect this is because it was done with stockinette stitch as opposed to garter. I hadn't realized it makes that much of a difference regarding density and surface area, but it makes sense that it would.

I had to wrap the lentil balloon in a sock to make it big enough to stuff the ball. Since it's the same weight, it's still great for poi, but being so much larger and less squooshy, not so good for juggling.

I used this pattern and Crash Into Ewe sock yarn on size 2 needles, and stuffed it with a balloon filled with 1/2 cup of lentils.

It's an ideal stress-squeezie thing. I can't put it down. It would also make great juggling balls, and hacky sacks, should such a concept ever come back into vogue.

I'm delighted with how it turned out, although if I were to market them I'd have to modify the pattern somewhat.

melon lace

I may be kicked out of the Lace Club for saying this (first rule of Lace Club is, never talk about Lace Club) but it is just so fricking easy. Really. It is. Here's that melon stitch (appropriately rendered in Midori green mohair in Victorian Lace Today), here done in a shiny gray cotton worsted I found in a box somewhere in my dining room:

Nah, you know what's hard? Finding specific words in Arabic calligraphy. Anybody know Arabic?

I figured that macrame might be a good way to use some of the really nice yarn leftovers that aren't substantial enough to knit anything with. I started practicing last night. It's really fun, more satisfying than tatting. You just have to keep telling yourself "over, under, over, under."

No finished macrame objects yet, but if you're jonesing to see something, here's a sample I knit up with some silk-wool chunky blend using the Oyster stitch on size 10 needles.

Here is the Swallowtail Shawl from the Fall '06 (I think) Interweave Knits. Made with Morehouse Merino laceweight wool in Mermaid and trimmed with blue glass beads.

Actually, I finished it last November, but just got around to blocking it yesterday

Last year I did not keep track of my finished objects. I only know there were a lot of them. Maybe I should do that this year, instead of thinking I'm going to bother reading 50 new books.

also, I finally finished my Fanning the Flames mittens:

made with Shaeffer Anne yarn and size 1 needles

I love them. Especially the cuffs.
wasabi_poptart: (yarn)
yeah, I knit a Jayne hat.

I am rather proud of it, though. It came out well. I used Paton's Classic Merino Wool, one skein Paprika and two skeins Winter White; four packets of orange kool-aid for the orange and eight packets of lemonade kool-aid for the yellow.

I used this pattern, more or less, except I cast on 80 stitches, did the 2x2 rib with size 8 DPNs and the rest with size 10, and double-stranded the yarn.

Started working on Clapotis this weekend ...

The yarn is Blue Heron Cotton Rayon Ribbon in the Dusk colorway, which in the skein looked like a Tiffany window.

I believe my search for the definitive teddy bear pattern may be over:

Not the scarf, though. I think a bikini would look better. Definitely a bikini with strategically-placed tassels.
