Oct. 31st, 2005 09:40 amSo. Guavaween.
Guavaween is how they do Halloween in Tampa. It's wild. Every city I've lived in has their own Halloween thing: DC has Georgetown and Baltimore has Fell's Point, but Guavaween on the streets of Ybor City is really something special.
It was more fun to be sober and enjoy the spectacle than be drunk and part of it. More fun to stay alert and puff on your cigar and sidestep the crowds and the puddles of vomit and laugh at the drunks in the pasties and the diapers.
Like most of my life in Florida, when I was living through it, it didn't seem like any big deal at the time, but looking back on it now, I realize it was pretty damn cool.
I bet if you googled it you'd find some good stuff. I would, but I'm at work and all the best sites are blocked.

Oct. 31st, 2005 12:19 pmThe reason why Halloween was always my favorite holiday is because that was when all the good scary movies would be on TV. The classic Universal and Hammer films. The fun low-budget franchises, before they became franchises. Badly-dubbed Italian potboilers directed by Mario Bava and/or starring Barbara Steele. The Poe/Corman/Price screamfests. Mutated insects and Godzilla and The Blob.
Of course, with the advent of VCRs, that didn't matter so much anymore.
I am old enough to remember life before VCRs. Are you???
Also because of cinnamon, which just tastes like a good horror movie on a chilly autumn night.
