What to watch?

Now that the water ballet is over, I am looking forward to some quality downtime of knitting and sloth and teevee. What should I watch? I feel like I've seen everything on Netflix streaming ... I need recommendations!

Shows I've already watched every episode of and really enjoyed (within the past year):
House of Cards (US version)
Orange is the New Black
Hell on Wheels (both seasons)
Call the Midwife (the season already on Netflix, plus the second season which just somehow magically appeared on my hard drive one day)
Ripper Street
Bob's Burgers
Oddities
The IT Crowd
The Vikings (also not sure how that one appeared on my hard drive, but lo and behold there it was!)
Torchwood (even though the last season SUCKED)
Friday Night Lights
Sherlock

Shows I made myself plod through to the bitter end, though I didn't think much of:
Copper
World Without End
The Crimson Petal and the White
Nurse Jackie
Weeds (actually didn't get through the fifth season, but by then I'd seen enough)

Shows I liked at first but eventually got so bad I gave up on them:
Misfits
Heroes
Spartacus
Weeds
Being Human (UK version)
Lie to Me
The Walking Dead

Shows I started but could not get into:
Luther
Pretty Little Liars (sorry, Miriam, it was just too stupid)
Snuffbox
The West Wing
Hemlock Grove
Archer
House of Cards (UK version)
Bones
House
Six Feet Under

Ongoing shows I'm all caught up with:
Madmen
Game of Thrones
Vampire Diaries
Hannibal
The Killing (up through last season)
True Blood (up through last season)
Dexter (up through last season)
Downton Abbey
Justified
American Horror Story (first season)
Lost Girl

(BTW, I don't have cable, just Netflix, and now that I get my internet through Xfinity, no more bit-torrenting shows magically appearing on my hard drive anymore)

Try Orphan Black.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Done!

(I should probably mention that I'm not limited to streaming.)

I am blaming you for my binge-watching of 5 episodes of Friday Night Lights last night. :)

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose!

I'm finding "The Bridge" compelling on FX.

We've started going back to watch Black Adder, and I'm now trying to track down "The Thick of It" due to the new Doctor Who casting.

I am oddly amused by "Father Ted," the Britcom from a while back.

I'll second "Orphan Black" for you.

"World Without End": I actually got that book to read on the plane back from Italy and finished it, then turned on the miniseries. BAD IDEA JEANS. Couldn't stomach more than 20 minutes of the show.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's been so many years since I watched "Black Adder" (and it was in college, so I was pretty stoned throughout most of it), that it might be like watching it for the first time! thanks for the rec

[identity profile] eccyntric.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed Top of the Lake. It's on netflix streaming.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks! will check it out

[identity profile] weegoddess.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I hadn't realized that you had given 'Archer' a try already. Ah well.

I've heard amazing things about 'Downton Abbey' (Maggie Smith, being snarky in a costume drama. What's not to love?) but I hadn't started on that yet. Ditto, 'Torchwood', but for completely different reasons.

The UK (original) 'House of Cards' series, from what I've seen, is pretty engrossing if one can ignore the dated styles and such. I've seen the first several episodes. If you like 'Madmen' and the US 'House of Cards', then you'd probably like the UK version too? Or was the US version simply a remake of the UK version?

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
All caught up on Downton, and already seen all of Torchwood.

Could not get into the UK version of House of Cards.

#1 for my summer viewing has been The Returned/Les Revenants. Which is a French show that pays heavy homage to Twin Peaks & Six Feet Under with a story about what happens to a small town when the deceased returned.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
oh, that sounds interesting! where is it available? (just checked--not on Netflix yet)

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Teh Interwebz ;). I watched it via UK Channel 4's iplayer using Tunnel Bear (also works for other UZ channels). Or it's online at http://www.mopvideo.com/tv-shows/the-returned/.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
yay! thanks

[identity profile] notmarcie.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I was about to suggest this too. I loved it and it became the one hour David and I would ignore everything except the tv.

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I just got another friend of mine here in California to watch it because she loves Six Feet Under. Les Rev does a very good job of showing it as an influence and is possibly the only show I've seen inspired by SFU that manages to not just turn into an annoying edgyfest.

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh and Sherlock, which I love love.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yes I watched Sherlock! Liked the show but LOVED Moriarty.

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, super creepy. Though I am a sucker for the whole Byronic genius look.

[identity profile] h-loves-c.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
"And honey, you should see. me. in a crown."

I will occasionally pull that episode up on Netflix and JUST watch that scene.

Better of Ted for stupid fun

Home Movies if you've never seen it

There was a recent British sci fi show Misfits that I want to watch

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I enjoyed the first two (I think) seasons of Misfits very much, but then the curly-haired kid left and was replaced by a character so obnoxious I couldn't stand to watch the show anymore.

(I eventually cancelled my Hulu Plus membership anyway because the connectivity was just so lousy.)

[identity profile] jdawgspi.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
AGH, Better Off Ted! I loved that one.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Deal with it!

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wait, there's also the good stuff on ABC Family, which never lasts more than a season: Bunheads, 10 Things I Hate About You, Greek, & Huge.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I heard some good things about Bunheads.

[identity profile] emily-hahn.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It is very good and sadly only one season. The 10 Things I Hate About You adaption is surprisingly good and the Heath Ledger character is played by Gregory Peck's grandson, who is weirdly kinda hot.

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2013-08-07 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm watching the first episode right now and I like it!

[identity profile] jdawgspi.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I can recommend Peep Show, which I believe is all on Netflix Streaming.

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent! thanks!

[identity profile] kazoogrrl.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Since I never watched it when it was out I'm pondering My So Called Life

I do not know if these are available on Netflix

[identity profile] altamira16.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you might like Life on Mars (UK version)

I think that if you have not seen Firefly, you should see Firefly. Then after that you should try Castle and Suits.
I recommended seeing Firefly first because of the cast overlap with the other two shows. Castle makes a number of references to Firefly. Suits contained a cast member from Firefly, and then some of the Game of Thrones cast members come into play in the most recent season which would not necessarily be on Netflix yet.

I think you should try The Wire. I don't know if you will like it or not, but you should try it anyway.

Re: I do not know if these are available on Netflix

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Saw both Firefly and The Wire years ago. Enjoyed them both, but not so much as to watch again (especially not The Wire, as Season 4 was very rough going).

I watched a few episodes of Castle, but didn't get into it. I probably didn't give it enough of a chance.

Will check out Life on Mars and and Suits. Thanks!

You liked Bob's Burgers but not Archer? I have not seen that before! I am the reverse.

You have watched more things than I actually know about, so I'm not sure I have anything left to recommend you. I guess..Futurama eps you haven't seen or something?

[identity profile] wasabi-poptart.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I will have to give Archer another chance!

[identity profile] seaya.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
People have told me I should give Bob's Burgers another chance. The first ep made me feel like puking.

Regarding Archer: some of the supporting characters get more and more off the chain as it goes on, like Pam.

Also, Aisha Tyler=awesome. :-D

[identity profile] illusiongrl.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
cable free here too & have recently started getting into older shows we'd never watched before. Right now we're going through Prime Suspect. It's really clever, but more in the 90's way so it's not snarky, just really intelligent with good social commentary. You may already have seen it, but it's definitely worth a mention in case you haven't.

[identity profile] notmarcie.livejournal.com 2013-08-06 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Of the things already mentioned I'd endorse The Thick of It, Peep Show and Life on Mars ( starring John Sim aka The Master) Then if you like Life on Mars watch Ashes to Ashes.

Red Riding is good (and has the curly one from Misfits) but very strange and dark. A little Lynch like.

The Hour is quite good, Dominic West is in it, based on the new BBC news format in the 1950s. Also features Peter Capaldi.
