more car trouble

Tell me, how is it possible that a clutch should fail at 53,000 miles?

It has to be something else. Maybe a rat has chewed through the cable or something.

Where did you have it serviced for the clutch that's in there now. I had a friend on LJ recent have one fail at 15K b/c there was some work that had to be done on another part (like resurfacing it or somesuch). The mechanic forgot to do that part, the life was very short on the clutch.

Is it the whole clutch or just a part like the pressure plate?

A) It's the original clutch (at least, it's been the only clutch for as long as I've had the car--two years)

B) Don't know yet. They're looking at it now.

They didn't resurface the flywheel :) At least that's what it sounds like in your friends case. That's pretty standard, so it sucks they missed such a basic thing. If whoever had this car before really was rough on the clutch, it could go that fast.

HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT?!? YOU ARE A GENIUS! (I just looked it up on LJ and that is exactly what he said it was. I am surprised you do not know [livejournal.com profile] neutrinoj since you know Terry, but perhaps you do not know everyone in that crowd...)

I've known Terry for ages through a mutual Boston friend when he was in Boston, so counting on how he knows neutrinoj, it might be surprising, or not :)

I know that because I am a HUGE CAR GEEK. My grandfather and I used to take engines apart together. I've seen a flywheel, and I've rebuilt a transmission. I also like giant robots, welcome to my brain :)

lol My dad was a mechanic, but he wouldn't teach his daughters a damned thing. We went to college so we didn't have to have grease under our fingernails. Little did he know... I'm not a huge car geek, but I must love them b/c we've got a '74 Challenger and '82 CJ-7 in the garage.

I like Giant Robots too! (I have GR#2 somewhere, with Hello Kitty in the karate pose on the cover.) I cannot wait for the Astroboy movie to come out.

I think then you probably do not know neutrinoj, but he will eventually be in your circle of influence like I am now.

Nice to meet you!

Also, I agree. If the car is new to her and the previous owner was a crappy driver, they could have worn out the clutch quickly. But then that would be major suckage on their part and you'd have to worry about what the heck else did they ruin that badly.

Ugh. That's a big reason why I'm going to buy another new car and drive it for a decade. Peace of mind! All the damage is my own fault!

I'd say that if the person was inconsiderate of the clutch I'd get the o-rings for the oil system all checked out, in case of oil change neglect or changing types of oil back and forth like you're not supposed to do. Other things are easy to figure out, like brakes, thankfully. Then again, some people just have lead feet or ride clutches in traffic, which just wrecks them.

Admit it. Late at night, when the pets are asleep you love to go out onto the boulevards of Baltimore and pop wheelies. I know it's true. Don't lie.

rats ate through a bunch of cables and whatnot in my engine compartment in my last car (and they were starting to build a little nest in there!!), so i vote rats.
