Okay, I did some research on the whole Temple Mount issue, and I found out the law banning Jews from entering is as Israeli one, not a Muslim one. So the people who are keeping the Jews out of the Temple Mount are other Jews. I could not figure out why, except that it's so sacred nobody ought to be there at all. But then the Muslims built a Mosque there, so they are allowed in. Or something like that.

So how does that work? Do they card you at the door for your religion, or are you on the honor system not to try to sneak in, or what?

If they card you at the door, Maher probably wouldn't have put up with that. I'm pretty sure the guy doesn't give a crap. Or is that no longer what you're asking?

I'm just trying to figure out how it works. In the past, whenever I heard somebody say "Jews are forbidden from the Temple Mount!" it was always a Jew who said it, and it was always in the same tone of righteous indignation, like the Temple Mount was some kind of restricted country club in upstate New York. So when I saw that Bill Maher had filmed a scene in it for Religulous, I started to wonder, whose law was it keeping Jews out and letting Muslims in? From what I know of Islamic practices, anyone is welcome anywhere, provided you are showing the proper respect, so it didn't make sense that the Muslims would ban Jews, or anyone, from the mosque if they wanted to go.

Its a law on the Israeli books, or it's a matter of Talmudic law? They probably let American tourists (especially ones with camera crews) in unless they're superobviously Jewish.. I imagine if it's a law law then it's probably in place to keep the peace between the opposing sides.

Don't you know that Jews are the worst anti-Semites out there? The whole 'Who's a Jew' Law in Israel is just wackiness. Only ppl in Israel care to say other Jews are not Jews, whereas everyone outside says you're Jewish even if you are 1/8th and baptized Catholic.

It's messed up.

My mom renounced her Judaism 40 years ago, before I was born even, yet I'm still totally in by most accounts*, despite having been raised Catholic and baptized and confirmed and the whole nine yards. So I guess from my perspective, I never got that at all, but I imagine if I wanted to be Jewish and didn't already have a Jewish parent, it would be a far different story.

*the only person who ever said otherwise was my sister's father-in-law, who would live to regret calling me "the non-Jewish one."
